Branch circuit Monitors are an exciting addition to the Square D PowerLogic product line.  In the past Data Center and Call Center managers have had sleepless nights not knowing the loading on PDU branch circuits.  Circuit churn as equipment is rolled on and off the floor leaves many operators in the very uncomfortable position of not knowing exactly what is powered from each circuit.  The nightmare scenario was exacerbated as dual corded / dual power supply servers have become the standard in the computer room.  Each power supply of an Uptime Institute compliant is capable of fully supply power to the server. (See Fault-Tolerant Power Compliance Specification Version 2.0; EMCS, Inc. uses this specification, when appropriate, for procuring our own servers.)  A fault on a single circuit can transfer a significant load to the servers alternate power source; possibly overloading it.  If/when it trips the problem could "spider-web" through the Data Center causing significant business interruption.

BMCs help manage this problem.  Individual current transformers for each panelboard branch circuit indicate the current.  PowerLogic SMS software trends the current over weeks, months, or even years.  The SMS software can be configured to give Warning and Critical alarms based on branch current.
